A Moment In Time: Athene

Dekko sits down and chats with Athene, youtube star and nub pwnr.

Posted by SmellyMoss on Jan 8th 2009 10:06

By RT Dekko & Dar-El (The True Last Son of Krypton)

Humankind has a few, major milestones; the ascent from Africa, the spread of agriculture from the Middle East, the building of the Great Pyramids, Moses descending Mount Sinai with the Word of his mate the Lord God Almighty tucked under his arm, that time when a poor carpenter supplementing his income by dabbling in blessing the meek, turning over the money lenders tables and generally annoying Pilate with his Son of God ways got himself done over but now, in the 21st Century we, the humble masses, are blessed to bare witness to one of the most awe inspiring spectacles that has ever been seen by human ocular cavities; the day Athene broke cover and spoke to the Press and us meagre rabble at Enemy Down are the chosen vehicle to hear and spread His word, for lo! He is He who is I am and we are but His servants

Pray silence for Athene, the worlds greatest ever gamer and King of World of Warcraft, doth approaches!

It is a strange sight to see the man who has graced so many YouTube videos approach you in the flesh; there is an odd, radiant light that surrounds Him, almost like an aura and as He steps ever closer the candles on the tables of the Café where we are meeting all blow out simultaneously. All the noise within the Café Mongo stops, almost as if we were within a vacuum, the jangling of cutlery, the random conversation, even the sizzling of food in the kitchen all falls deathly silent. The patrons of the place look with a mild trepidation instantly toward the source of static in the room; Athene!

He stands proud and erect in the middle of the Café Mongo, all eyes are on Him within a moment, as if He appeared from nowhere and with a slight lifting of His left hand the diners within the Café all resume their daily turmoil, the eggs continue frying, the World breathes. Athene nods a satisfied nod, so small as to be barely seen but I am watching closely as He steps up to my table, I smile and extend my hand to greet Him but He doesn’t take it, no. Instead He crouches and looks me right in the eye and without speaking He holds the stare for one whole minute, timed precisely to make me both at ease in His presence while in awe of being granted audience.

With one elegant sweep, throwing his coat aside, he sits in the chair opposite and nods for me to begin. I waste no time as I know that Athene has the will to leave before I utter even one syllable, so I fire out my first question while His eyes bore through my pure, native skull.

Enemy Down: Firstly; what is your earliest gaming memory?

Athene: Pong. I started gaming when gaming started; I am the alpha and the omega of a gamer.

Enemy Down: Do you play exclusively PC?

Athene: I play exclusively games that are not for scrub nubs. Right now I play WoW, even though I have to admit it has some scrub nubs problems, with players like Mooncow and Serennia, but it’s still a game for pros and I play it like a pro.

Enemy Down: And out of the current gen, which system do you choose for personal play?

Athene: PC. I don’t know about other consoles because I don’t have the irl money to buy them, and they don’t accept in-game gold in stores which is imo ridiculous, because it’s more of an achievement to get it. Irl gold you can actually get by working at Mickey D’s, while in-game gold requires at least a little bit of skill. It’s not rocket science tbh to see that.

Enemy Down: What is the origin of ‘Athene’? How did you get started, was it by accident or design. Tell us your origin story (like a super hero).

Athene: The origin of Athene started when I started playing Ultima Online and I was owning everybody. I knew I was going to be the best player in the world, so I needed a nickname that fitted my greatness. Athene is the goddess of wisdom and war, and that’s me. Wisdom and war. The only other nickname I could have taken was Jesus, but he eventually got ganked by the Romans, which tbh would never happen to me. When I get ganked, I just pwn the shit. I don’t get nailed to a cross if you know what I mean. So he failed, and I didn’t, so I can’t really identify with that.

Enemy Down: From then, what made you want to make the first ‘Athene’ video & post it on YouTube?

Athene: When WoW came out and I started to pwn that, I also started to discover YouTube, and I thought that if there are movies about Julius Caesar and Napoleon and all those random fags, then there should also be a show about Athene, but then realistic, and down to earth, for the people to see.

Enemy Down: How much actually is act and how much reality and do you ever carry the act into your real life with or without knowing? If so, give us an example.

Athene: I do not do acting, like role-players. I don’t get it in my head that I am something I am not, you understand. I am the best player in the world, no more and no less, I am humble but also realistic. People sometimes see my vids and say I’m funny, tbh I don’t see the funny, I see only the real and I see people who can accept it and people who cannot accept it.

Enemy Down: Have you considered scripting what you do and making a new, financed movie?

Athene: Scripting is for Hollywood, the art I make is pwning, and the show of me is my real life. Its reality TV. Maybe I’ll make another movie about me to play in theatres, but the problem is that I have BG’s and raids and arena to do, so a I am actually very productive and busy if you understand, this interview is already taking up too much of my time. So you are honoured by this.

Enemy Down:
What was the initial reaction to the first You Tube post?

Athene: What was the initial reaction when Jesus turned the water into wine? The answer is the same as on your question. Some people can accept it and some are in denial, but at the end of the day, I am superior and they know it.

Enemy Down: Does the hate mail outweigh the fan mail? I get a mixed reaction from the people I show the first WoW video too; the majority’s first reaction is that they want to kill you!

Athene: The way I see it there is no such thing as hate mail, there is only fan mail. But there is two kinds. You have fans who have no big ego, and fans who do have a big ego. The last kind are the ones who cannot get over my superiority and they pretend to hate. It’s basic psychology; any psycholificker will tell u the same.

Enemy Down: You’ve broke the ‘one million views’ mark on your first ‘Athene’ video; did you celebrate in any way?

Athene: I break records all the time, and I celebrate all the time with pwning and broccoli, it’s the lifestyle of a pro, I don’t do fancy parties and I don’t stroke my ego, I am very humble even when I celebrate.

Enemy Down: Does it make it nearly impossible to find games when people know who they are playing with they leave?

Athene: People would pay millions to play with me. I don’t have problems with people leaving; only the people I kill, like Serennia, he would actually always leave when I join.

Enemy Down: In other words, do you feel that your fame has become your crutch in life?

Athene: Tbh I don’t care about fame, it doesn’t influence me; I don’t let it go to my head. At the end of the day I am just a man who is superior to other men because of who he is, not a man who is famous or something, I see myself through realistic glasses, I don’t live in a fantasy and I don’t let my fame be an issue.

Enemy Down: How did it feel the first time you became aware of just how many people worshipped the ground you walk on?

Athene: How does it feel when you drop a rock and it falls to the ground? It’s only logical and natural tbh; I don’t want to make a big fuss about things that are normal, if you understand what I mean.

Enemy Down: Being known as a Shaman in some circles must have its benefits?

Athene: I am a Paladin. A Paladin is a Holy character. The benefit is that I pwn everyone, the downside is that there are scrub nubs like you who can’t remember my class.

Enemy Down: Do you consider yourself a role model?

Athene: Yes, because I inspire ppl to be better persons if you know what I mean.

Enemy Down: If so, do you plan out your videos or just act on impulse?

Athene: My videos are just episodes out of my daily life, they are all purely reality.

Enemy Down: Do you consider what you say & do may have an affect on those watching & should you be a more responsible role model?

Athene: I think I am the most responsible role model because I call things as they are, and I don’t make up stuff in my head, it’s integrity, and people recognize that.

Enemy Down: For example; how does your girlfriend really feel about being referred to as ‘bitch’?

Athene: Like I say I call things as they are, a scrub nub is a scrub nub, my bitch is my bitch, she appreciates my honesty.

Enemy Down: How did you feel the first time some one killed you? Was it expected? Tell us the story.

Athene: I never die because of other people; I don’t know what you’re talking about. The first time someone killed me, was myself, because my keyboard was broken and I ran off a cliff.

Enemy Down: How did you feel when you got banned for what your friend did on your account? Reset to ‘Warrior; Level 70’ after 600 days of work must of hurt.

Athene:
Actually I was laughing, because it doesn’t matter, the whole world knew we did it first, and Blizzard couldn’t handle our pro-ness. To me that is a sign that I am the best of the best.

Enemy Down: I hear that others who you play with got banned; can you tell us what happened (and are they still playing with you)?

Athene: We only got suspended for 3 hours, so we’re all cool. During those three hours we tried playing other games because our lives stopped for a moment, but luckily they gave us our accounts back quickly and we could get back to serious business.

Enemy Down:
What is your opinion of competitive clan gaming & are you (or would you ever consider being) part of a clan?

Athene: I leave them alone because I would imbalance the competitive gaming world too hard, it’s like Muhammad Ali, or Jack Bauer, or any other pwning historical figure, I would pwning the shit out of everything, you know?

Enemy Down: What are your plans for the future?

Athene: Pwn nubs.

Suddenly, two white doves flew behind our table, seemingly emanating from each of Athene’s shoulders.

Outside the Café Mongo the clouds instantly grew dark & the rain began hammering against the pavement, thunder rumbling low over the hills. I turned to mention my surprise but, like a puff of smoke dissipating, He was gone. My eyes dared believe a man could move so fast but, I laughed distractedly to myself as the unholy wind blew the umbrella’d tables down the street in His wake; that was no mere man, I had just spoke with Athene. I knew the World would never be the same.

I’d like to thank the all knowing Athene for granting me some time and allowing me to see what he truly is; a gaming legend and WoW Messiah. I’d gladly pwn a nub next to him any day and I know many of you out there feel the same.

So, my good gaming kin folk; if you are of hardy stock, if you carry the crest of the Alliance over your heart, if you eat a pound of broccoli a day then you might, just might, have what it takes to view Athene’s world famous vids on YouTube, go there and type in ‘AtheneWins’ and begin your journey of self discovery. Also, the truly enlightened among you may wish to visit the den of the beast at www.worldofathene.com

The End

Thanks to Athene for his time & thanks to Dar-El (brother Oyo!) for rocking the questions with me.

I actually prefer Athene's friend, the one with the cap (usually sits half naked next to him while Athene plays WoW.) His sketch with the ladies is very funny. Those Belgiums... LOL!
