30 Second Rundown: Germany Hits CXT LAN & Monkey Island Imminent

2K Games have a 20 title deal up on Steam, German government out of touch

Posted by SmellyMoss on Jul 7th 2009 12:35

First up, the German government is going to ban Counter-Strike from being played at LAN events in Germany. So far, only a few areas of Germany have been affected with ESL and Convention-X-Treme taking hits. From the sounds of it, it seems that it is only a matter of time before a full ban comes into affect.

The return to Monkey Island is imminent. The classic comes back in remastered form on July 15th on both Xbox Live and Steam. I haven't been this excited for a game since Empire: Total War. Hopefully, Monkey Island won't be as disappointing.

LucaArts has reached a download deal with Steam. No titles have been confirmed but I'm sure we'll see the usual old games run back out including Indy and Day of the Tentacle.

Colin McRae's DiRT 2 has been put on hold for the PC so that Codies can make use of the upcoming release of DirectX 11. New features in the API will include Tessellation, Multithreaded rendering and Compute Shaders. New features that I actually understand? None. DirectX 11 is out with Windows 7 on October 22nd.

2K Games have a great deal up on Steam - 36 quid will land you 20 titles including BioShock, Railroad Tycoon 3, Prey and Civ IV (one of my favourites).

Valve have confirmed how much impact the recent Left4Dead 2 boycott had on their release plans... absolute nadda. In fact, the Steam group "didn't change our plans at all."

Duke Nukem 3D is coming to the iPhone. The port will include the entire single player campaign from the original PC version of the title.

Grease
is coming to the DS and Wii. Surprisingly, it will be aimed at the casual gamer. What?! No ED Grease League? 505 Games is missing a trick here.

Silverlight ads are coming to Xbox Live sometime in the future - my guess is November when the next major Live update comes. Many Live users have expressed disappointment upon hearing the news but MS says don't worry! "One of our core principles is to enhance, not interfere with the gaming experience, and we work directly with our partners to only deliver experiences that are relevant to the LIVE community." Sure.

Finally, something that has been batted around for a week now is that StarCraft 2 will not have LAN support. Why does this surprise anyone? Quake Live was only the beginning kids, so it should come as no surprise to find someone else following in similar roots. The future is online - get used to it.

Why are LANS being banned in Germany? :/

LAN's won't be banned, just games that are violent. For example, Quake is already banned thus you see it played at ESL Intel FN in the UK but not in Germany. This is why UK LAN's need to take more responsibility when it comes to age ratings on games - most are +16 which is great but I've seen 10 year old kids walking around i-Series taking in the delights that are CS and CoD in action. Yes, they are all spectators but they are still being exposed to violence that is unneeded.
