Welcome one and all to the inaugural review in our new series of ‘mini reviews’ from your dear Uncle Dekko and why don’t we throw caution to the wind and begin with an Xbox Live Arcade review of a game that’s been out for ages!
“Wow, what a wild and crazy idea!” I hear you shout but neigh, ‘tis but a devious ploy to make more of you buy the subject of this illustrious review, none other than oft delayed Behemoth fun fest Castle Crashers.
I’ve been liking the look of this little title, by the makers of Alien Hominid, since way back when E3 wasn’t a dire wasteland. Finally, the game is here. For those of you who have played Hominid you’ll instantly recognise the distinctive, cartoony graphical style with its infectious sense of humour. The graphics set the tone; bright, fun and simple. This is the base of the game, a side scrolling hack and slash epic with knights, axes, roughians and damsels in distress.
Hominid was notorious for its difficulty but the tricky factor has been toned down for this more ‘user friendly’ sequel, perhaps due to the four player co-op which is available on and offline and is the perfect way to play but, be warned, like Gauntlet there is treasure to be shared, so choose who you play with carefully.
The game starts with a banquet, you’re character is rocking out when a ruckus occurs and the guards are sent out to hush the noise but, horror of horrors, they all die terrible deaths with one lone, arrow speared guard, falling back into the banquet hall. It's then up to you and your mates, if they’re playing, to step up and deal with those barbarian hordes with your swords, axes and maces as well as your magical abilities, which differ from knight to knight, except for Michael Knight who just has a mullet and a talking Trans-Am.
The game is cool, funny, infectious, bright and great fun with mates in co-op and really should be picked up for a slice of Medieval fun & frolics but the asking price of 1200 MS points may be too much for some punters, which is a shame but hey, that’s what the trials are for. Buy it people and get hacking!
The Dekko Sandwich Scoring System States: ‘It’s a nice sandwich’, aka 8 out of 10.
