E3 2009: Final Thoughts

A last glance at what was announced at E3 in 2009 including L4D2, MW2 and Project Natal

Posted by SmellyMoss on Jun 11th 2009 17:11

With E3 now only a memory, it's time we gave the expo a nice, hard look. 2009 saw E3 go back to its roots after a very forgettable 2008 event. This year we heard several big announcements accompanied by most publishers giving full, information-packed media conferences. Let's take a look at what was announced and shown 2009:

Modern Warfare 2

The most anticipated title of 2009, Modern Warfare 2 had already been announced by the time E3 rolled around. What we did find out though is that two multiplayer maps that do not come with the game will be available only to 360 users. We also had the opportunity to see gameplay of a campaign mission entitled, "Cliffhanger." The level featured ice climbing, beautiful Kazakhstan country side and a wicked snowmobile chase - what can I say? I'm Canadian.

Left4Dead 2

Microsoft confirmed that Valve are making a sequel to the zombie loaded, Left4Dead. In retaliation, 25,000 disgruntled players screamed, "too soon!" Since then, Valve have confirmed that there will indeed be L4D DLC released after Left4Dead 2 arrives. As for the actual footage of the game shown at E3, you can watch the trailer here. Left4Dead 2 arrives on November 17, 2009.

Forza 3

Another 360 exclusive, Forza 3 will hit shop shelves this October. The game looks stunning and, from what I could see, is sure to live up to its predecessors. The title will feature over 400 cars with a chance to race in over 200 different events. The game will also include a rewind feature. Basically, Turn 10 looks to be taking all the best bits of Forza 2 and combining them with Codie's Race Driver: GRiD. You can watch the trailer here.

Halo: Reach

We didn't find out much about this expected title from MS. What we do know is that its a FPS, the game is a prequel to Halo: CE and that you can get in on the beta if you buy ODST. Teaser is here.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Coming in 2010, SMG2 will continue on from where the original left off; more Mario and even more planets for him to explore. New features include the ability to ride Yoshi and use his tongue to collect Star Bits along with more challenging gameplay. Watch the launch trailer here.

Final Fantasy XIV

Codenamed Rapture, the latest edition of FF will be arriving on the PS3 and PC sometime in 2010. Apart from the trailer, not much was announced. However, the title will be a cross-platformer on Windows and the PS3. Watch the trailer here.

Microsoft Natal

The biggest announcement at E3 was easily Project Natal. A full demo of the controller-free gaming and entertainment experience was given on stage during the Microsoft press briefing to ohh's and ahh's. The sensor bar feaures a camera, depth sensor, microphone and custom software that captures 3D motion and features voice and facial recognition. No ETA was given for the device but demos at the event were very impressive.

The Leftovers

In other E3 news, Sony announced the overpriced PSP Go, the Wii is getting a New Super Mario Brothers title along with Wii Fit Plus and a new controller is coming to the PS3. Oh, and I can't forget the announcements and confirmations of Agent, The Last Guardian, ModNation Racers, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Gran Turismo Mobile, Golden Sun DS, Crackdown 2, Perfect Dark, Crysis 2, Metal Gear Solid: Rising, Metroid: Other M, Nier and Supreme Commander 2.

Gonna assume Halo:Reach is gonna be based on the book "Fall of Reach" where the covenant mistook humans to be forerunner artifacts due to humans being decendants of forerunners, thus the war started.

I'm hoping Bungie will rename it to Halo: Reach Around...

Isn't that Contact Harvest Rhys? Anyway I'm not sure what they'd do with Fall of Reach as a book cause have of it shows Chiefy's roots and his training. I dunno bout you but I'm not keen on spending half the game as a 6year old kid beating the crap out of soldiers.

Cutscenes = yes - play = no

bah, your right. should double checked before I posted.

I doubt they would do MC again, I mean it would almost be the same as Halo 3 as I doubt they will be making a new engine for it.
