E3 2009: EA, Microsoft & Ubisoft Briefings
Posted by SmellyMoss on Jun 2nd 2009 09:33
E3 is alive and kicking with the press/media briefings for EA, Ubisoft and Microsoft all taking place yesterday in LA. Microsoft have stolen the show so far with some impressive announcements on the Xbox Live front.
Music, movies, television, social interaction and facial/voice recognition technology were all confirmed during the presentation and that doesn't even include the several game confirmations that the company announced. EA made a show of their title diversity during their time on stage and announced EA SPORTS MMA, a mixed martial arts title. Ubisoft didn't announce anything new but did show some footage of upcoming titles.
Ubisoft
It took almost 30 minutes before any game footage was shown by Ubisoft at their media conference. However, when they did start to show footage it was great. Ubisoft mainly showed titles we already knew about: Assassin's Creed 2 (Nov. 17), Splinter Cell: Conviction (Autumn 2009) and Red Steel 2.
Also announced was move tie-in, Avatar (Christmas 2009), based on the film of the same name by James Cameron. Ubisoft's motion graphics arm produced 100 special effects shots for the film.
Wrapping up their time in the spotlight Ubisoft also confirmed Your Shape on the Wii, Style Lab for the DSi, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Smash Up!, Rabbids Go Home, No More Heroes 2 and Ruse.
Electronic Arts
EA are the poster boys/girls of diversity. They cater to gamers of all ages and both sexes and their press briefing at E3 really demonstrated this. To start things off, trailers for previously announced titles were shown including Mass Effect 2 (Early 2010) and Dante's Inferno (Early 2010). Surprisingly, EA made little song and dance about their midnight North American launch of The Sims 3.
From there on out, EA were all about new titles and demos for eminent arrivals. Fight Night Round 4 (June 26), Grand Slam Tennis (June 12), Need for Speed: Shift (Sept. 18), Dragon Age Origins (Oct. 20), Littlest Pet Shop Online (Fall 2009) and a new Charm Girls Club title were all put on display.
EA SPORTS also had a big showing at the conference with the announcement of EA SPORTS MMA, a mixed martial arts, their answer to the bestselling, UFC 2009. EA also confirmed Tiger Woods PGA Online (July 3).
To wrap things up, EA showed Brutal Legend (Oct 16) and trailers for upcoming MMO's All Points Bulletin (2010) and Star Wars: The Old Republic. The Old Republic is set to be the first fully voiced MMO and is considered one of the largest voice-over projects ever, in all forms of media.
Crysis 2 was also announced but no footage was shown. Disappointing, but still exciting to say the least.
Microsoft
At yesterday's Microsoft Media Circus several titles were confirmed. Most importantly, Left4Dead 2 (Nov. 17). Also announced were Forza 3 (Oct. 27), Crackdown 2, Halo: Reach (Autumn 2010) and Metal Gear Solid Rising.
Microsoft also demonstrated several titles at the conference including The Beatles: Rock Band (Sept. 9), Modern Warfare 2 (Nov. 11), Final Fantasy XIII (Spring 2010), Shadow Complex, Joy Ride (Winter 2010), Splinter Cell: Conviction (Autumn 2009), Halo: ODST (Sept. 22) and Alan Wake (Spring 2010).
To end things off, MS announced several Xbox Live additions coming this autumn. They included applications for Twitter and Facebook, a revamped movie library, Last.FM & SKY TV intergration and Project Natal.
More to come from E3 tonight with the Sony and Nintendo press briefings.
