TF2: The Sniper/Spy Update

The Sniper Update has finally arrived! Wait... the Spy Update? Here is a breakdown of what it includes

Posted by SmellyMoss on May 22nd 2009 19:14

I'll keep this nice and easy... a day-by-day breakdown of what the Sniper Update in TF2 has to offer.

Day 8

Team Fortress 2 will be FREE all weekend via Steam! Whoop!

Day 7

Jarate or Jar-based karate - splash this on an opponent and they will take 35% more damage. Water is the only way to stop it and if you get it on a teammate it extinguishes any fire effects. Nice.

Day 6

The Ambassador is announced. This beaut of a pistol has the pinpoint accuracy of a sniper rifle but you have to let the gun cool off between shots. It even comes with a gorgeous rosewood grip and an engraved barrel.

Day 5

Meet the Sandwich! Nope, nevermind. Day 5 is all about Spy Achievements! It also was the day when the Spy video below was supposed to come out. In honour of their screw-up, Valve have made their own special achievement - the Welcome to the Internets achievement! Funny stuff. Full details are available here.

Day 4

Surprise! The Sniper is not the only character getting an upgrade in TF2. The Spy has a couple of new toys now as well. The Dead Ringer spy watch allows its user to drop a sneaky decoy corpse and works as a clocking device when a player is hurt. The Cloak & Dagger spy watch allows a user to regenerate their cloak while standing still. Take a look at the new Spy video here.

Day 3

The Razorback! A protective shield complete with car battery that shocks back stabbing opponents and renders their knife useless for a short period. The shield only works once though leaving you open to further attack so be ready!

Day 2

Payload Race! This is what you get when you take regular payload and add a second cart. Now, instead of attack and defence both teams will be racing to get their cart to their opponents side at the same time. Sounds pretty cool.

Day 2 of the Sniper Update also brings two new arena maps. Sawmill is the first TF2 map to feature a weather effect and Nucleus is a circular map featuring catwalks and radioactive waste. It will be interesting to hear first reactions to the new maps!

Day 1

First part of the update: the Huntsman has been revealed. To help bring the Sniper closer to the action, Valve have introduced a new weapon to the character: the bow and arrow. The weapon allows snipers to pin dead and dying opponents to walls.

From the TF2 website:

"Any experienced sniper will tell you how irritating it is when your targets keep moving around. The question is how to stop these cheaters from wind-sprinting around like they own the place. And the answer is to pin them to a wall. How? With arrows!

"Now, hold on," you might be thinking. "I'm strong, but no one could throw an arrow that hard." Introducing the Huntsman longbow, which solves that age-old throwing problem.

"Now, hold on," you keep saying. "Aren't bows and arrows primitive and harmless?" Why don't you ask the dinosaurs? Except you can't, because the cavemen bow and arrowed them to death. One headshot from the Huntsman can mean an instant crit, in addition to a bolt-riddled corpse hanging from a wall that's gruesome and funny.

And even if you don't kill them, they'll carry around a certain arrow-shaped something as a living testament to your awesome archery skills and their frankly unawesome dodging skills. Comes with 18 arrows and a one-second charge for full power shots."

But think how many nubs will enjoy it, get the game and become non-nub competitive players.
