How to Grow Old in a Clan: Part 1

Dekko continues on his journey to disect what makes a great clan. We don't know why he's on this journey, none of us asked him.... .... ....

Posted by Dekko on May 6th 2009 12:00

I was just a pondering at 1.15 am this morning on some of the thoughts which my 'Remember the Oyo' piece was vaguely drooling over in an absent minded way, those thinky bubbles being 'what makes a good clan'?

Well, not even good as even bad clans can be good, I mean strong.

Now UKesA has adopted a Football Association-esque rules system what with its adopting of football league style points & names etc. so I'll use it as an example as I know football terms so it may be easier to get my point accross.

OK, so with e-sports you get a heck fire dag'nam lot of young, teenage players (hold those filthy thoughts, you swine!) and with that comes a lot of unripen'd talent, you get skill without the wisdom of how to fully use it or you mature and lose it all too quickly. Sometimes both of these will happen at the same time. Sometimes you won't know which is which.

Example?

Let's go back to our footy analogie and look at a player such as Kevin Campbell (those younger viewers may blink in ignorance of His Campbell-ness now) who came up through the mighty Arsenal's youth system with a great fanfare having broken bucket loads of youth records on his way up, scoring something like 95 goals in 85 games, or thereabouts.

Anyway, into the senior team he came and a lot of raw talent came with him & much ooh-ing & aww-ing followed in its wake & we all got excited and I'm sure Supe Kev was aware of this great revellery in his name.

So, he plays games & gets through defenders like a well oiled foot through butter but his touch isn't quite there but hard work will sort that, or so we are told.

But then his goal count isn't very high. It's respectable but not what all the early hoo-ha would of indicated his talent was capable of & so it continues, deteoriating down the seasons until Arsenal sell him to Nottingham Forest.

Early promise didn't pan out and that's so very much like clan life.

Also, Ian Wright got signed & was a bad ass. He didn't get signed until he was 22, therefore his talent matured & his hunger to succeed helped him to focus his energy over the lures of drink, girls, tea and sandwiches (also known as 'the Square of Lust').

Both are remembered by the fans fondly but only one is an out & out legend. However neither of these good fellows could of done owt without those ten well groomed gentlemen behind them.

So all you kiddies out there with a modicum of talent should listen to your clan leader/manager/captain as maybe it'll be for your own good as skill without wisdom is nothing, just a dude with a talent for kicking standing on his own at the end of a pitch.

Then again, wisdom comes with age so maybe you should be over 80 to play e-sports? It's a queury only God Himself could answer.

So, over to you God, Creator of ALL THINGS....!!!
