Moss: My Top 12 Frag Movies

Everyone has a list of top frag movies, here are SmellyMoss' all-time favourites

Posted by SmellyMoss on May 5th 2009 16:14

The Frag Movie is about finding harmony between solid game play and well-timed editing and graphics. The best game play features consecutive frags, awesome weapon and map control along with great teamwork. Editing is all about timing and music. Bad music and a good frag movie will just go unwatched. Same goes with stylizing a montage. Good graphics and timing are a must but, like having the wrong music, busy graphics take away from the overall movie itself.

With that said, here's my list of the top 12 online frag movies I've seen yet. There are a few that I would've like to have included but could not find - maybe I just made them up? Also, I'm sure you guys can name a few that I've missed so feel free to comment! Now, on with the list!

12. JD Source (CSS)

Great footage, even better music. This was one of the first Source montages I ever saw and, without actually seeing someone playing the game, made me appreciate the skill involved. This film feels organic and the fact that JD shows his mistakes says a lot about his demeanor. Most players just avoid the subject altogether and why wouldn't they? It is tough finding the perfect symmetry between showing how awesome a player is and that even the best sometimes suck.

11. Kodiak 1 (CSS)

The best CS:S video out there? No. But Kodiak gets extra points for having an entire volume of these films. The music won't be to every person's taste but that just goes to show you can't please everybody. I really tried hard not to lead off with two CSS vids but the next one just nudges Kodiak into the eleven spot.

10. Reptile: The Movie (TF2)

Simple, yet effective. This movie is one of the best Team Fortress 2 frag movies out there. Yes, 7 minutes of frags by one player can be a little repetitive and I admit this one is a little on the long side but the strings of consecutive frags Reptile puts together are sick. As you will see when we get further up the list, a story can really help make a good 'tage great. However, this just goes to show that not every frag movie has to tell a story.

9. Finnish It (UT 2004)

There is nothing like a good, community-driven frag film that neatly packages the best that a community and game has to offer. Finnish It is all above the love of the game and it shows. Kudos to the Finnish It crew for putting it together.

8. Asian Dynamic Duo 2 (CoD4)

Justin Ge takes us through the drills. I can't pin point exactly what it is I like about this frag film so much but I do know that I have a soft spot for it. The graphics, editing and game play are all very good but it does lack kick. A story line would've moved it up the order.

7. SK Believe (CS)

Stringing together a bunch of kills with some pretty graphics is great and all, but sometimes it's nice to see a frag film with some substance. Take SK Gaming's CPL Winter 2005 video, a film that not only shows us why SK are some of the best players in the world but also features some good storytelling. Yes, it gets boring at parts but at least we know these matches meant something and weren't all just setup for cool montage shots.

6. ButtonBashers: Just Bashing Some Buttons (CoD4)

Before you even click play you know you're in for something special with the likes of Stevy, pietje and company gracing your screen. The music, graphics and game play all standout in this new frag video that is sure to take the web by storm.

5. Zickex: The Forgotten Hero (Halo 3)

I get asked for footage all the time and when Mattisson and Geten approached me about using some stuff from an XL I had shot I said yes only for one reason; they were making a montage for one of Europe's most under recognized gamers, Zicknex. The kid is a crack shot and fantastic to watch. Yes, the beginning of the 'tage is a little slow but it picks up at just over 2 minutes in when the music, graphics and Zicknex overall pwnage completely come together.

4. Clayman's Incorporated 2 (CSS)

This film gets a ton of flack for offering up possibly staged shots. Give it a watch and tell me what you think. For me, this film is put together in a tight package and it feels like a real reflection of what Source is about. Great frags, music and editing make this one of the best CSS videos out there.

3. Mousesports 2008: Ready, Willing and Able (CS)

This one has it all. Spectacular game play, sweet editing and graphics like no other. KaLa and moswanted set the bar extremely high with this one. Too bad Zola came along and raised it even further - see number 1.

2. Get Quaked 3 (Quake 3)

This is easily one of the best movies out there and is the inspiration for many frag film editors. Not only does the movie feature amazing players but its one of the most organic and natural feeling frag movies out there. No fancy graphics here, just frags and tunes.

1. Str8 Rippin: Halo 3 Montage (Halo 3)

Only Zola Media could do the boys of Str8 Rippin justice with this montage. The graphics are second to none, the music is perfect and the game play... well, it's Str8 Rippin! Note to anyone making a Halo 3 frag movie; watch this and learn. If you don't like Halo, skip right to 2:35 and watch just for the editing.

On that bombshell, I leave with you my favourite montage of all time.

I had never seen Q3 Annihilation or Annihilation 2 - both are crazy good. The gfx in the CS Annihilation are wicked. Icarus - I've seen the 04 CPL movie and that guys voice drives me crazy. It is still a good movie though.

to be fair, Jh's Auto-Aim sniping movie
http://www.pldx.com/movie/6/Auto-aim/
and the one of drjustice
http://www.pldx.com/movie/46/Team_DRUIDZ_Dr_Justice_Frag_Movie/
are by far more impressive than Reptile's one with all the crit stuff. Agreed, his rockets are quite nice, but nothing beats a double/triple closeup snapshot on scouts.
