The Revelation of Ryu

What has Capcom done to a classic franchise?

Sometimes you're driving home late at night and the street lamps illuminate in just a way, perhaps with a thin sheen of rain glistening in the air to make everything shine in such a manner that makes you believe you've seen the hand of God at work.

Sometimes when you're thirsty and you drink an ice cold glass of water and it quenches your thirst in such a way that you could drink the same glass over & over forever until you burst like an over filled balloon.

Sometimes you put Street Fighter 4 in your 360 expecting a decent beat 'em up experience not expecting a game that rekindles your love of gaming back to the level you had at 12 years of age.

Have you ever had one of those kind of revelations that light a spark in that romantic spirit of yours?

Street Fighter 4 is the rain pelting your window late at night that lulls you to sleep, it is the Rosebud saved from the furnace & accepted to enrich your life in all the right ways (before it's too late).

The game feels so right instantly as it takes all you loved from the seminal Street Fighter 2 and updates it in such a way that leaves you drooling with joy, your down, forward, punch Hadoken producing moments are all intact but there are the Supers and Ultras to contend with.

Twisting and turning the control pad in a myraid of ways produces the moves you know so well and the inclusion of a few extra twists & shouts sees an onscreen explosion of hand meeting face type death.

The game is a graphical treat, colourful and animated beautifully, the look on Kens face as he takes a jab to the gut is priceless and the onscreen big bang when you produce an Ultra is worth the price of admission, each move has been painstakingly crafted to look perfect and be recognisable to a skilled opponent as to where you're going to hit before hand a la Virtua Fighter.

The A.I. is challenging but beatable, I've found Zangief is more of a rounded fighter now & Abel is bloody annoying but a satisfying win is yours when he lays vanquished.

Online is great and I've only experienced a brief period of lag which quickly passed. The 'Quick Play' option couldn't seem to find me any games however, maybe it was just a random quiet period in Street Fighter land?

If you're not a hermit in the caves of Madeupastan then you wont be short of buddies willing to enter the fray to face off in that elegant battle of mano e mano, friend facing off against friend in a big fighty punch up brawl to the death with general gloating allowed for the winner.

A new challenger approaches!

You could be playing this into eternity.

Overall: 9.5 out of 10
