ATEI 09: Konami shows off music games

Guitar Hero, SFIV, and DDR X all at the ATEI 09 exhibition.

Posted by Ryoga Hibiki on Jan 28th 2009 14:31

With more games on show from the Amusement Trade Exhibition Interactive, we take a look at whats on offer from Namco Bandai, Konami, Arc Systems Works and Capcom:

Razing Storm (NAMCO BANDAI)

From the makers of Time Crisis, comes this lightgun shooter of similar proportions. Not only have they taken the cover pedal system from their previous Time Crisis games, but they have also improved upon their last machine-gun effort, Crisis Zone, by incorporating a two player move. Running on a PlayStation 3 based arcade board, the game has an advanced AI that reacts to its environment as you shoot and destroy objects and buildings around you - which mean enemies won't be following a strict pattern like all other lightgun shooters out there. The gun had a special recoil and speaker system to emulate the sounds of the weapons used.

Nirin (NAMCO BANDAI)

Those who felt that there are too many car based street racers will be pleased to know that Namco Bandai have a motorbike version with the same flair. Up to 4 players can race against each other on specially made "bike saddles", that can be tilted left and right for steering. The emphasis is perfect cornering, which allows you to build up your boost meter around the bends, giving you the advantage over your opponents.

H2Overdrive (RAW THRILLS)

A spiritual sequel to Midway's Hydro Thunder, this title takes these elements from it and adds a whole load more. An upgrade system allows you to upgrade your boats such as Superboost and stunts. No player cards are needed like Tekken or Wangan Midnight as data is stored in the machine and accessed via a pin code. Up to 8 players can join the race, each enjoying the full 60 frames per second from the high definition screens.

Street Fighter 4 (CAPCOM)

The newest game of the series makes an appearance in the show. Two cabinets were on show, linked up for versus play. Featuring 3D graphics and a host of playable characters, old and new, this is the title that all beat 'em up fans are waiting for. New features include the 'Focus Attacks', which allows characters to absorb blows and launch a counter-attack against their opponents. The game was actually developed on PC based hardware (Taito Type X2), thus the reasoning why a PC version will be out shortly after the console versions. For those who wish to play before the console release will be pleased to know that Capcom will be doing a nationwide tour in selected Gamestations and HMV stores, where you can play the arcade version of Street Fighter 4 and compete for Street Fighter merchandise.

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger (ARC SYSTEM WORKS)

Another beat ‘em up from the makers of Guilty Gear and Fist Of The North Star, features Guilty Gear style characters and gameplay. The title runs on the Taito Type X2 board and support high definition, widescreen play. All graphics are 2D based, giving it a retro, but high quality look. No doubt this will also make a console conversion very soon.

Dance Dance Revolution X (KONAMI)

Dropping the Dancing Stage moniker, DDR X is the latest release of the long running stage dance franchise. This marks the 10th anniversary to the series and features console to arcade data swapping, e-Amusement card support, USB connectivity and over 60 songs from old and new. Strangely, the console version will be on the PS2 format instead of the PS3.

Castlevania: The Arcade (KONAMI)

Another classic franchise gets an arcade makeover in the form of Castlevania. Players go first person as you can whip and shoot your way through Dracula's castle using a Wii-like motion sensor candle/whip. Just like in the other Castlevania games, you can whip objects like candles to pick up health hearts and weapons. You get to fight bosses like Death and the Count himself, so get those pennies ready for the ultimate battle.

Guitar Hero Arcade (KONAMI/RAW THRILLS/ACTIVISION)

It's finally happened. Guitar Hero experts will have a field day in the arcades with this outing. Based on Guitar Hero 3, strummers can rock out, either co-operatively or in a battle with songs of old and new. The guitars are build to Konami standards so these won't break after a millions uses, however, the whammy bar is gone. Features include online support, which may mean song updates and online play!

UBeat (KONAMI)

An arcade exhibition isn't complete without a unique title on show. Konami's newest Benami game is UBeat (juBeat in Japan), which features acrylic beat pads, similar to an Akai drum sampler. These pads must be tapped according to the 16 individual screens located underneath them. Songs feature modern and classic hits like a-ha's Take On Me and Chris Brown's Kiss Kiss. Online play is featured on the machines, providing an e-Amusement card is in your possession.

That's it for this years show, til next time...
