ATEI 09: Sega Offers Rambo & SR3

Sega Rally 3 and Justice League are just a few of the offerings at ATEI 09 in London

Posted by Ryoga Hibiki on Jan 28th 2009 09:12

Games Stars, ECTS, PlayStation Experience. They all have something in common apart from the obvious: they are not hosting events anymore. There's only one major event that's been consistent every year and that's the ATEI, the trade show event that focuses on arcade gaming and amusements. Strangely, it's a market that hasn't been as active as it was about 13-15 years ago, but let's not forget that it gave birth to mass competitive video gaming with the likes of Street Fighter 2 as the main catalyst.

Let's take a look at what games were on offer at this year’s event:

Rambo (SEGA)

The Italian Stallion is back in this light-gun shooter, armed with two massive semi-automatic weapons and a special 'rage' power-up to get those futile enemies down to the ground without being harmed. Featuring cut-scenes from only the first three movies, which is a bit disappointing as having footage and game-play from the latest Rambo movie wouldn't hurt.

Sega Rally 3 (SEGA)

Sega's flagship rally game is back in the form of Sega Rally 3, which incidentally was developed side-by-side with the 360/PS3 version of Sega Rally. Strangely, it uses a PC based system to run this, which means faster frame rates at higher resolutions as opposed to its console counterpart. Not only do you find courses from the console versions but also new ones and even remakes from their previous titles. Features a 'dual actuator motion system', which means your seat moves are you steer from left to right.

Hummer (SEGA)

Based off the off-road vehicles by General Motors, it's a crazy racer that allows two players to control the SUV. Each player takes turns in steering the motor, whether you hit another opponent or the wall barriers. There is a boost feature, which can be built up by driving through and destroying special objects. ThinkMotorstorm but you don't burn or crash out. The cabinet machine also moves as you steer, hit or land.

R-Tuned: Ultimate Street Racing (SEGA)

Sega-AM2, the development team responsible for games like Virtua Fighter, Shenmue and Outrun, has this underground street racer on display at the show. Features a simplified drifting system similar to Ridge Racer and unlimited turbo boosts to give those who are not as good on racing games a chance to compete against the seasoned players. You can choose from a selection of modified branded sports cars, such as Nissan, Honda and Toyota, as well as race in streets from different cities such as Tokyo and New York.

DJ Max Technika (PENTAVISION)

Based on the franchise that appeared on the Sony PSP and the PC, this South Korean game takes its music orientated product and gives it a touch screen makeover. The machine consists of two screens - one display for the audience and one that is touch screen. Note types appear on the touch screen, which are meant to be pressed or dragged in tune to the music. Those who want to save their progress can purchase a Platinum card. This also allows the player to personalise their cards with extra soundtracks, play against other players and also compete in Platinum Crew events.

Need For Speed: Carbon (GLOBAL VR)

This arcade version of the Need For Speed series offers players the chance to race in the underground street racing scene without the unnecessary storyline found in the console versions.

There are three modes on offer:

  • Amusement Mode - which allows you to race against 3 other players with a choice of 10 cars and 7 tracks.
  • Career Mode - race through career mode to earn special cars, which can be stored in your own personal garage.
  • Drifting - if normal racing isn't for you, then you can drift throughout the special courses, either by yourself or against other players.

Justice League: Heroes United (GLOBAL VR)

Debuting at the show was Justice League: Heroes United, where players can control an ensemble of characters from this DC franchise in this scrolling beat 'em up. Players can use the likes of Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman, each with their own special moves to aide them in their quest for peace. Either played solo or cooperatively, you will fight against the horde of enemies controlled by the likes of The Joker and Lex Luthor.

More to come from ATEI 09 tomorrow with games from Namco Bandai, Konami and Capcom!

hopefully the justice league game won't suck - a great wealth of IP going to waste at the moment...
