Top Tips - UKeSA Managers & Teams

What teams qualify for the UKeSA Leagues?

Posted by SmellyMoss on Jan 27th 2009 14:05

There is a lot of uncertainty on who can and can't compete in the UKeSA Leagues and Cups. Well, here is the lowdown.

A team is eligible only if:

A. The Manager holds IP ownership of the team AND is British and UK based.

OR

B. The team is a UK Limited company.

Option A: The Manager holds IP ownership of the team AND is British and UK based.

This is pretty straight forward. The manager must hold a UK passport and be based in the UK. They must also control the Intellectual Property of the team they manage. This as simple as registering your team on Enemy Down and making sure that it's an original team name.

Option B: The team is a UK Limited company.

This is a little more complicated. The manager of a team that is a registered UK Limited Company does NOT need to be British. However, the team must be a UK based company. The easiest way to find out if a team is registered as a UK Limited company is through Companies House.

UKeSA does NOT require teams to be register as UK Limited companies.

UK Team Ltd Company Examples: Team Dignitas (Team Dignitas Ltd), Infused Gaming (Infused UK Ltd), Reason Gaming (Reason Gaming UK Ltd)

Teams should also keep in mind that they MUST compete on UK servers.

Editor's Note: I've edited this article down and simplified it since its original posting as I overcomplicated matters with my original wording. Apologies!

when are the teams that dont meet these requirements going to be removed from the tournament listing page?

Article has been heavily simplified since I just made everything even more confusing.

faken - the removal process will begin once Championship sign-ups begin. Non-UK teams will be asked to prove they have a British manager and they will also be asked to ensure they can play on British servers.

In the UKeSA FAQ it says:
"Who is eligible to manage a UKeSA team or squad?
Anyone based in the UK can manage a UKeSA team."

That differs to the "A. The Manager holds IP ownership of the team AND is British and UK based."

Can somebody clarify whether a manager must be British or just based in the UK?

"The manager must hold a UK passport" Unless your managing under option B

Thanks for pointing that out Bub - FAQ has been changed to reflect the above.

Cheers Smelly, Graze you suck, quoting 1 bit of official text against another bit of official text didn't help in the slightest :P

@ Bub
It’s actually easier if you look at the reasoning behind the regulations.

Manager must be in the UK:
This is so that the manager will be available real time to interact with UK mainstream media (i.e. do a photoshoot and interview with with PC Gamer).

Team ownership (therefore “IP”):
If the UKeSA grows the way we’d all like it to there will be real monetary value in a team names, logos and image (just as in football). We want that value and benefit of that success to remain in the UK gaming scene. So if you’ve got top 4 French players on your team it doesn’t matter because the overall sponsorship and media benefit comes to a Brit who ultimately owns the name and logo (or the brand). If the British Team Manager fires his (or her) French players and hires Germans – so be it, that’s his/her progative. They own the team and can do with it what they like.

This is about building value in the UK gaming scene, not bankrolling foreign teams.

Just to finish this you need to think about what a Team Manager is building. Every Team Manager in Premiership Division has the opportunity to build a brand, something of value. What is Chelsea FC, or Liverpool FC or the New York Giants? They are all “brands”. Everytime you buy a replica Chelsea FC shirt or they appear on a magazine cover the commission on that commercial transaction belongs to the owner of the Team, or in our case the Team Manager. And when they win do they sell more shirts – hell yes (as the Americans would say).

What does the UKeSA provide? It provides the stadium in which those teams and Team Managers can achieve fame. A reliable, media friendly competitive structure. What is the point in being the best gaming Team in the UK if nobody has ever heard of your game or the competitions you’ve won? That's were the UKeSA comes in. It aims to make gaming accessable and media friendly.

Can a Manager manage more than one team, and if so can they manage more than one team playing the same game in the same division?

I have another question:-

Suppose a foreign team offered me the position of "UK Manager", but the "IP" of the team remained in other people's (foreign) hands. I'd still be UK point of contact, I'd still fulfil the duties of Manager as laid out here, but I wouldn't "own" the team name / logo etc. Would this meet the criteria?
